The goal of my sustained investigation was to reflect on Vietnamese culture and the emotions felt when celebrating those traditions/holidays. While creating my pieces, the questions kept in mind were “What Vietnamese culture had I experienced?” and “Why are those cultures important to me in the memories which they help create?” Asking these questions, I discover the focus of the culture and how to center the piece around it. In Image 6, the focus centered on the foreground with the red envelope and tangerine, yet the setting supports the piece further. In addition, composition directs the perspective of the memory I had. Personal pieces are more pivoted on a few things (1, 2, 5, 6), while for more social cultures, a wide view was used to experience it as a whole (3). The fan plays a special role in my life (2, 8, 9, 10). The traditional fan dance helps connect an old tradition with the present through honoring our culture as well as friends and family, shown by the people on the homemade fan (10). Additionally, the colors connect the past, pink which are similar to fans I use in dances, with the present, colorful swirls which remind me of the Vietnamese summer camps I went to (10).
