My sustained investigation focuses around the bridge from childhood to adulthood. The main question that guided my work was “how does it feel to grow up?” I came to the conclusion that at this point in my life this concept means saying goodbye to the people and things that have shaped me as I grew and the feelings that accompany this. This is reflected in my work as I chose to focus on recreating images of people I care about and will be forced to leave shortly as this chapter of my life ends. As a portrait artist, I experimented with different mediums and styles in order to add as much detail and emotion as possible to my work. Watercolor represented elegance and grace (3,6) while stark paints such as oil and acrylic allowed me to express more fervent emotions such as confusion, excitement, and power (2,7,10). Pencil was a medium I linked specifically to fading memories (4,5,8,9). In work 9 I used blue and red marker to create a 3D futuristic look emphasizing that over time memories will fade leaving mere remnants or outlines behind. I also reworked and revised individual pieces to create an overall sense of unison in the way of style and realistic accuracy. |
